Explore Milan like a true Milanese: Experiences you can't miss

Milan is known around the world as the fashion capital, but for a small-town girl like me, it became so much more. During my Master’s, I had the chance to live in this beautiful city, and it quickly stole my heart. Compact yet rich in culture, Milan may be smaller than cities like Paris, London, or New York, but its charm lies in its people, language, beauty, and of course, its fashion.

One of the first things that surprised me was the Milanese breakfast tradition. Coming from a different food culture, I was baffled to see people indulging in sweet treats first thing in the morning. But soon, I found myself cherishing this ritual: flaky yet soft chocolate croissant with a creamy cappuccino. Always remember to never ask for a cappuccino after 11 a.m. if you want to blend in! Asking for an extra hot cappucino is better there, as Italians prefer it colder than normal. These little details make Milan so unique.

If you’re planning to visit Milan, do it the Italian way. For starters, skip the ketchup on your pizza – opt for chilli oil or just enjoy the flavours as they are. We can’t talk about without talking about fashion. Areas like Duomo, Brera, and Navigli will make you feel underdressed no matter how stylish you think you are. You’ll spot some of the most fashionable people here, and just walking around can inspire your inner fashionista. Living in Milan will either make you a style icon or a fashion hoarder, there is no in between!

One of my favourite pastimes in Milan was simply walking. A casual stroll from my apartment to Duomo took about an hour, with just 15 minutes more to reach Via Monte Napoleone, one of the world’s most luxurious shopping streets. I loved discovering new shops, whether they were independent boutiques, vintage gems, or luxury stores. Everything was of the highest quality and authenticity that is rare to find nowadays. For instance, a leather goods store there would instantly trigger your nose because of the authentic smell.

And here’s something fun: Milan is a hub for luxury pop-up stores. Brands like YSL and Miu Miu go all out with experiential pop-ups. I once visited a YSL event that featured photo booths, candy stands, and adorable free samples. Miu Miu had a summer-themed space with branded books and free popsicles. These aren’t just marketing stunts, they’re unforgettable experiences. So, if you ever come across one while shopping, do visit because it’s an experience of a lifetime.

When to visit Milan

The best times to visit Milan is from April to May and September to October. These months fall between the peak tourist seasons, offering mild weather and fewer crowds. I personally recommend late April or early September for the most pleasant travel experience, with temperatures ranging between 20-30°C.

How long to Stay

If you have no time constraints, stay as long as you can. But for first-time visitors, I recommend at least two days, one for sightseeing or a day trip to Lake Como, and one for shopping. If you love fashion, add an extra day because the shopping is worth it. Ideally, spend 3-4 days to truly absorb Milan’s culture. Savour the stay by doing it the milanese way.

Getting around Milan

Milan’s public transport is efficient and easy to navigate. Grab a travel card at any tobacco shop and choose between hourly, one day or multi-day passes. Use Google Maps for directions as it’s pretty much accurate to track the routes. For airport transfers, a taxi is ideal if you have heavy luggage. Otherwise, buses are a great option. These buses are generally available right outside the airport, and takes you to the main railway station of Milan. For day trips, it’s best to download the Omio app, as it gives you the best available trains and prices. For taxis, InTaxi app is locally used, if Uber isn’t working.

Must visit places in Milan

  • Duomo di Milano & Terraces: A gothic masterpiece. It is the main church located right in the centre of Milan. You will have to come here, as the entire shopping district is located here. If it’s possible, prebook to experience the architectural masterpiece from inside. Definitely, do not miss the view from the terraces.

  • Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II: Italy’s oldest and most beautiful shopping gallery. This place is home to Prada’s first store. The area has the most expensive shops and cafes, but is a sight to behold. Do visit for the most beautiful pictures and while at it, just get a pizza to enjoy the view.

  • Brera District: Chic, artsy, and filled with galleries and quaint shops. This is one of the most creative places, while still being extremely luxurious. The crowd here, really knows how to dress. If you want to bump into coolest people, while enjoying the views, go here.

  • Navigli: Best explored in the evening, this place is famous for its canals and buzzing nightlife. This is filled with youngsters and people who are just looking to have a good time. The vibes are immaculate specially on a friday night and the weekend.

  • Parco Sempione: A serene green escape in the middle of the city. This is just 15 minutes walk from duomo. Away from the happening city, if you are just looking to explore a lit bit more. However, the whole city is pretty much walkable, so keep it as the last option.

  • Via Monte Napoleone: The ultimate luxury shopping street. This is the most expensive street in the world. You will find the top luxury brands here like Hermes, Loro Piana, Louis Vuitton, Goyard, Bottega Veneta and what not. You might also run into a celebrity, if the fashion week is on. So, don’t miss this out.

  • Serravalle designer outlet: This is the closest designer outlet from Milan. It is a must visit for fashion lovers. The outlet has the craziest deals ever. It’s even better if you visit during the summer or winter sale. There are brands like Gucci, Prada, Dolce and Gabbana, Bally and Sandro etc.

Must visit restaurants in Milan

One of the best ways to experience Milan is through its food, and not just at fancy restaurants, but also in the cozy corners, loved by locals. Here are some of my personal favourites that made my Milan memories unforgettable.

  • Pasta d’autore: This is a true local gem. The place is small, cozy, and filled with brick walls, warm lighting, and the smell of fresh pasta. It’s a first-come, first-serve spot (no reservations), and there’s almost always a line.

  • La Magolfa, Navigli: Hidden in the streets of Navigli, La Magolfa is where I had the best Aglio e Olio of my life. The dish is simple but full of flavour. If you’ve never been a fan before, then this place might just change your mind.

  • Majuda: Slightly away from the main city centre, this breakfast spot is a must if you’re in the area. The chocolate croissants here? Unreal. Get there by 8:45 a.m. if you want them fresh from the oven. Trust me you won’t forget this.

  • Raviolando: Yes, it’s a Chinese place in Milan. And yes, it’s totally worth visiting. Located near Duomo, this serves delicious dumplings (5 for just 4 euros), and some of the best boba tea I’ve had in Italy. A great option when you want to escape from the Duomo crowd or just want a break from pasta.

  • Sciué, Navigli: If you’re strolling along the canals in Navigli at night, grab a takeaway pizza from this spot. Not any, just the marinara pizza with a coca cola. Sit by the canals, enjoy your slice, and take in the moment. It’s the simple experiences that are the most memorable.

  • Bgood: Perfect for those indecisive mornings. This offers a fixed brunch menu with juice, coffee, two sides, and dessert—all for around €18. It’s filling but light, and the vibe is relaxed and stylish. A perfect start to your day.

  • DeAmicis Uno: This is undoubtedly the best place for aperitivo. I’ve been there twice and both visits were unforgettable. The atmosphere is warm, the drinks are excellent, and the complimentary snacks are mostly vegetarian (and super tasty). Don’t skip this place, even if you’re short on time.

  • Princi Bakery: If you find yourself near Duomo early in the morning, stop by Princi for a fresh croissant and cappuccino. It’s quick, delicious, and perfect for a breakfast on the go before your shopping adventures begin.

  • Piz: A must for pizza lovers. Located near Duomo, this place offers amazing pizza without the high prices of touristy cafés nearby. It’s the perfect refreshment spot during a long day of exploring or shopping.

  • Osteria da Fortunata: This restaurant sets the bar for handmade pasta. The chefs prepare it right in front of you, and the taste is just as impressive as the presentation. Slightly more expensive than average, but so worth it.

  • Sapori Della Pasta: This small shop went viral on Instagram and for a good reason. You can fully customise your pasta, and the quality lives up to the hype. It’s simple, satisfying and fulfilling.

  • The Blues Canal: Craving something different? Head to this Irish-style pub in Navigli for karaoke nights, great drinks, and a fun atmosphere. It’s a great late-night option if you’re looking for options other than Italian.

  • DG Martini: Want a luxurious yet accessible dining experience? This beautifully designed spot by Dolce & Gabbana offers amazing food with a fashionable edge. It’s slightly pricier than your average meal, but it’s absolutely worth it.

Aperitivo Culture

One of the most unforgettable parts of Milan is its aperitivo tradition. Around 5-6 PM, locals gather at bars to unwind with cocktails like an Aperol Spritz and enjoy complimentary snacks. For just 7-8 euros, you get a full experience – food, drinks, and vibes. This is normal, but Fridays and the weekends are so memorable. Italians truly know how to live, and Milan is a testament to that, even as Italy’s fastest-paced city. If you want to embrace la dolce vita, this is the place to start.
